To put the Tea Party numbers into perspective, 362 of 435 members of House of Reps are white or Jewish, which is 83%, and 357 are men (82%). For the country as a whole, about 65% are white and 49% are men.

Obviously, such definitions are always somewhat fluid and so these numbers may not be identical in every source.

As to why the Tea Party have such a composition, I think their conservative/libertarian reactionary tendencies are more likely to be shared by individuals who perceive that their privileges are being eroded.
