How to Host a Victorian Tea Party....The English custom of serving a formal tea was begun in the late 19th century by the Duchess of Bedford, who wanted an afternoon snack to ward off hunger pangs until the late evening dinner. Pay homage to this Victorian custom by hosting an authentic Victorian tea party...
Encourage guests to dress in elegant attire befitting the dignity of this most Victorian custom.

Table Decoration

Cover the table with a tablecloth of damask or brocade. Layer with a lace tablecloth on top.

Set the table with delicate china decorated with floral pattern, polished flatware and crystal water goblets.

Fold linen napkins in the shape of a flower or other fancy fold or wrap napkins with polished silver napkin rings.

Place sugar, cream and milk in crystal serving dishes.

MENU

Offer petite finger sandwiches with such fillings as smoked salmon spread, cucumbers, watercress and roast beef with horseradish.

Accompany finger sandwiches with assorted cheeses and fresh fruits, such as blue cheese with pears and cheddar with wedges of crisp apple.

Offer a selection of two or three classic teas, such as Earl Grey, Orange Pekoe and Ceylon. Serve tea in a china or silver teapot (never from the kettle).
