If 9 renowned surgeons diagnose spinal stenosis and 1 chiropractor calls it hoax, is the patient cured? We Answered:
Your analogy is missing an important component. Those nine surgeons are trying to get everyone else to agree (i.e. a democracy) to force the patient to take surgery regardless of whether he agrees to or not. And their main argument appears to be that "they know better" so just shut up and do what they say.
Another way of saying this is that while you might agree to have surgery because you believe the diagnosis, I would like to have some more time and get more information. However, if you agree to surgery, then by default I must also undergo the surgery (analogous to implementing carbon legislation).
You should see now how inaccurate your analogy is. If you want to have or delay your own surgery, fine, that's a personal choice. If you want to implement carbon legislation, well that affects me so I have a say.
Edit: Baccheus, it is you who is calling the kettle black. You say I am denying a vast mountain of evidence. It is irrational for you to assume that I must see this evidence equally as compelling as you do (I do not). You try to justify your irrational position by claiming that my motivations are personal and political.
Further, your "mountain of evidence" contains some components which are not evidence at all. But that's another story.
Edit2: Pegminer, it's not a good analogy, I pointed out why yet instead arguing against my points you put words into my mouth which come close to slander. Why do you take that approach? Can you not just argue the points?
Edit3: Pegminer, I would never say this: "I understand the scientific evidence, but I have no interest in trying to fix a problem that will mainly affect later generations" and quite contrary to you, I would have no respect for someone who did.
Edit4: Get real Virtualguy. Do I need to quote scientist James Hansen who has stated categorically that we need to get to 350ppm CO2 or there will be runaway climate change? Get your t-shirt here: http://www.cafepress.ca/Project350/

R&P: Let's decide -- What are the best songs of 2009 (Round 1 - Part 10)?We Answered:
"Ulysses" by Franz FerdinandThey both sounded retro, FF early synth 80s and Tea Party very late 80's/early 90's alternative, to me. The Tea Party video even seemed to be a throwback to that era with the irreverently gross DIY approach of gluttonous cake consumption and plastic babies floating in the tea. And I get it, their name is Screaming Tea Party so they had a screaming tea party..............clever. I thought FF made something more interesting and new with their chosen influence. I will read "Ulysses" someday soon I hope. It's going to be one of my 50 on the book challenge. I'm tackling it in the beginning of the year so I have plenty of time in case its reputation for inaccessibility isn't all hype.
"Hall of the Dead" by Isis
They were equally humdrum. I almost picked "Hyperactive" because it's shorter but decided to go with the raspy metal vocals instead of the shrill metal vocals.
"Run This Town" by Jay Z (featuring Rihanna)
For years I have struggled with exactly what I should wear to the Apocalypse so I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Rhi Rhi (and her stylist) for helping me finalize my outfit with faux-fur shoulder pads, garters with thigh-high f**k me boots and a fishnet half veil. Apparently civilization will fall but fetish wear will survive.
"Let It Rock" by Kevin Rudolf featuring Lil Wayne
"Let It Rock" is fluff but it's danceable. I could put aside my music elitism to dance to it. The only thing that Jerk song inspires me to do is take birth control and punch tweens.
"Useful Chamber" by Dirty Projectors
Didn't Everything Everything have a big song called "That Thing You Do!"? Weren't they called The Oneders then? Maybe not.
