from what i can tell, the conservative view is that poverty is fine because people will be able to work hard and escape from it.

Of course, this is an extremely simple-minded view since one of the biggest determinants of being poor as an adult is being poor as a child. the kid born into poverty, without the social networks, the education, the comfortable lifestyle, the chance to concentrate on studies, and on, and on... Is always going to find find it much much harder than the kid with wealthy parents. Inequality destroy equal opportunities.

Not only that, but it immoral to accept a society where people can live on the breadline and unequal societies suffer from worse crime, violence, drugs, teenage pregnancy, and unhappiness.

Just compare the crime rate in brazil to equally wealthy, but more equal Romania.
