First let’s look at a key word in your question “mainstream,” meaning to share the values and beliefs of the majority. If that were true then they would have been selected to go on to challenge or retain the election. You would have to study history in order to find out the answer. The Republican Party was formed out of the ashes of the Wig party due to the Wig party not supporting conservative values. It is important to remember that democrats and Republicans don't decide on how is elected to serve, it is the American voter. If you’re “mainstream” Republicans are losing support of the voters, then they are not mainstream, people have the right to vote for those they feel represent there values and beliefs, it’s not the other way around. As for who wins, victory is meaningless unless you have leader serving in government that share the same beliefs as you, in most cases you are voting for the lesser of two evils.

I don't think it matters what color someone is or if there was a party associated w/ this. What I find refreshing is how the 3rd party is the fastest growing.
