The English Tea Party

Sarah Said:

What act did the English attempt to enact that lead to the Boston Tea Party?

We Answered:

The Tea Act of 1773.
This Act was passed to enable the East India company sell tea directly to the American merchants. This would have allowed tea available at a cheaper price. but unfortunately it still had the tax attached, though nominal. The revolutionaries, who were opposed to any taxation without representation did not fall into the trap. Instead they refused to buy it and refused its unloading at the Boston port. The mood of resistance culminated in revolutionaries, in the guide of Red Indians, entering the tea-laden ship and unloading tea chests into the sea.

Irene Said:

Looking for a restaurant in Boston that is themed to Boston Tea Party, invasion of English, similar to that?

We Answered:

Can't think of any place like that (I've lived here all my life) There is a Tea Party Museum, where the kids can throw chests of tea overboard, but it is closed for renovations and will not reopen until 2010. Plimouth Plantation (south of Boston) is a living museum where the people working there are in character, but more like 1620 not 1775 http://www.plimoth.org/ . Then there is Sturbridge Village another living museum, there they are 1830 era. http://www.osv.org/museum/index.html

Andy Said:

What can I bring to an English tea party?

We Answered:

Well I am English born, so I will tell you....

Tea Party food is always small in size.

You can have two different plates, but presentation is 1st!

Then the finger food, has to be small...and cute.
Cucumber sandwiches are a must!... but with no crusts on the bread at all........Scones and cream and Jam.
Tiny cakes, with icing...The size about 2inches by 2inches..NO bigger. So you can make up a slab of cake, cut to size 2inch..by 2inch sq...Icing on each one, and maybe a cherry on top..or a walnut, that is acceptable...or Tiny sausage rolls.Remember to place food on lace Doyle's,on tray or plate.

p.s. wish I was coming...yummie.

Frederick Said:

How it is possible that the original Tea Party people were fighting for freedom from The English people?

We Answered:

If you look at the Old Testament there is an awful lot of killing and slaughter condoned and assisted by God , the massacre of the people of Jericho by the Israelites is a well known example , in addition various of the good guys in the bible (Abraham for example) owned slaves it was part of the normal way of life then. The killing of native people by the Christian setters is nothing out of the ordinary it happened in lots of places (South America , Australia , Africa, etc) but also remember that diseases brought in by the settlers killed a lot more of the locals than the guys did with their swords. You need to understand that the ten commandments really only apply to your own nationality. After receiving them the Israelites immediately went off to Canaan to kill the Canaanites who were living in the promised land. There was also the crusades and the inquisition to think of two other examples where the church encouraged and organised the killing of innocent people.
