Voting in the UK - A little confused.?We Answered:
You have a polling card for the local elections, so yes you are OK for the general election and any other election as it's the same register. Everyone is telling you right - you registered on the annual canvass (that's what it's called) that came round last autumn, so you're registered. All the adverts are just a nudge to people who didn't register then. No doubt your local council is now busy working away preparing to print even more polling cards for the general election, so you should get another one soon, and yes - that won't have come round yet because it was only announced today.Unlike local elections, which are always on fixed dates, no preparations can be made for a general election until it's actually announced because one can happen any time the Prime Minister wants it to. (Though technically only the Queen can dissolve Parliament and call an election, and in theory she could do it whenever she likes, but in reality she only ever does it when the Prime Minister asks her to - that's why Gordon Brown had to go and see the Queen this morning.) The only rule is there has to be one at least every five years. In this case, unusually, the five years is nearly up and calling it for the same day as the local elections saves councils having to open up polling stations twice within a few weeks. That's why having a general election on 6 May has been called the worst-kept secret of the year!
