Election Postal Votes

Corey Said:

how does arrange for postal voting for forthcoming Council election on 4thMAY 2006?

We Answered:

Contact your local council as soon as possible and ask for a postal vote. I believe that the deadline for such postal votes is 4.00pm BST on April 24th 2006

Toni Said:

Postal Votes are they a good idea or not?

We Answered:

I use postal votes, but you don't have to post it in the post box. You can take your filled in envelope to any participating ballot box outlet and post it straight in.

Tony Said:

Is it illegal to vote twice in the UK election? I just moved into a property where the previous tenant has a?

We Answered:

Yes, it's illegal to vote twice. To use someone else's postal ballot paper is electoral fraud and a criminal offence. This is why there's so much argument about postal voting - it's very open to fraud.

Everett Said:

Who do you think is more likely to be behind this Postal Vote fraud? Left-Wingers or Right-Wingers?

We Answered:

Typical Asian trick !

Diane Said:

Matthew Said:

why does my [english] general election postal vote paper only have 5 party options on it?

We Answered:

Because in a British Parliamentary election, in theory parties don't exist. You vote for the PERSON you want to be your MP - though of course most of us decide who on the basis of what party they belong to. So you only get the chance to vote for a particular party if they actually put up a candidate in your constituency.

If a party is going to be able to do that everywhere, then because there are 650 constituencies, it needs 650 people willing to be candidates, 10 more in each constituency willing to sign the nomination form, and enough money for each candidate to put up the necessary £500 deposit (if you want to stand for Parliament, you need 10 local voters to nominate you and you have to pay £500. That £500 is lost if you win less than 5% of the votes - this is what it means if you hear that a candidate has "lost his deposit". It's designed to discourage nutters.) All the other parties you mention just aren't big enough to be able to achieve that.

Do the sums and you find out that to have a candidate everywhere, a party needs to raise £325,000 and that's before it spends any money on campaigning. The big parties will all get their money back but the small ones probably won't.
