How Do You Register To Vote

Eileen Said:

Why do Americans have to register to vote and how does that work exactly?

We Answered:

This is a good question. We register to vote, so that it can be ensured that all of the people who are voting are qualified to do so and are casting only one vote. We often register to vote at the nearest courthouse, and sometimes there are places where we can register in other public places (e.g. the Dept. of Motor Vehicles). In some places, you have to register your affiliation with a particular party (the choices are normally Democratic, Republican, or Independent) and in other places you don't. Also, just because you register yourself as a Democrat or a Republican doesn't mean that you're not allowed to vote for a candidate from another party. In fact, it's quite common for people to vote for candidates from both parties in a single election. I'm glad that we have registration, because it ensures that everyone who votes is qualified to do so and that he/she casts only one vote.

Clifford Said:

How many times do you need to register to vote?

We Answered:

If you've moved, you should re-register for sure. And in some places, you should re-register if you missed an election because Republicans remove as many people as they can from voter rolls.
