Independent Voter Registration

Clifton Said:

I am a registered Democrat voter, where do I change registration to Independent?

We Answered:

You can vote however you want, no matter how you're registered. In fact, trying to change your registration could possibly result in accusations down the road of voting twice & causing your vote not to count at all, considering all the fraud & confusion that seems to arise during election time & vote counting.

Jean Said:

Should voter registration workers be allowed to ask if you want to change parties to vote in a primary?

We Answered:

I went to register as an Independent for the 2008 primary but there was only the California Independent which is not affiliated with the national Independent party. I did not vote at all because I would have to switch to Republican party in order to vote for Ron Paul. You can switch from one party to the other and back again but I didnt want to do that. So I was registered as "unaffiliated". Now I learn I am called a NP (non partisan).

Then a card came in the mail that asking me if I wanted to vote for Republican or Democratic candidates in June as an NP. Because we don't have an open primary, I had to choose one or the other, or not vote. In 2008 Republicans allowed unaffiliated voters to vote for them, but the Democrats did not.

The way it works in California is you are forced to vote as a Republican or Democrat because they don't want an Independent party. If you want to change that situation, vote Yes on Prop 14 for open primaries. The only catch is that the candidates don't have to reveal their own party.

Janet Said:

Is it hard or a hassle to switch your political affiliation on your voter registration?

We Answered:

All you need to do is go to the post office or DMV and fill out a new form, mail it ! There it's done! Very easy! (in some states, you can find them on line, look up your secretary of state for your state, print the form and mail it)

Katrina Said:

Where can I find info on voter registration by state?

We Answered:

Just call the nearest courthouse. You can usually register there, or they can tell you where you can.

Nathaniel Said:

Change of voter registration?

We Answered:

Every state may be different in this regard, so contact your local city/town clerk or selectman - and ask them how to go about it; where did you register to vote in the first place?

My state allows you to declare 'independent' but when a primary comes, you have to declare one party or the other- and if you do not unregister after that election, you will remain that party - unless you go and re-register independent.

Luis Said:

What are my options as a decline to state voter?

We Answered:

The question of whether a party is going to allow independent voters to vote in the primary is answered election to election. In three out of the past four primary elections the Republicans have allowed independent voters to vote in their primary. The Democrats have done so in all of them.
