Danielle Said:

what happens after you register to vote?

We Answered:

The next things you will get will be your voter information pamphlet, with the text of all the propositions and arguments for and against, and then your sample ballot, with a copy of the ballot and information about your polling place. They come out about 6 weeks before the election.

Can I vote in the CA Primaries?

We Answered:

California is a closed primary, meaning you can vote in only one primary.

The Democratic Primary only allows registered Democrats and non-partisan voters (undeclared) to participate.

The Republican Primary only allows registered Republicans.

Basically, you can vote by absentee ballot or stand in line at the poll booth. Check out the link below for more info. Personally, I visited my local voter registration office to get registered for the Republican Primary.

Can you be registered to vote in two states?

We Answered:

You can vote in either state (not both, of course), but if you register in Illinois, you should cancel your California registration. It shouldn't be a big deal to re-register there when you move back.

Here's the form to register in Illinois:

Good luck; glad you're voting!

Should I register to vote in NH if I live in CA?

We Answered:

instead of registing at the next voter registration drive, go to your local election board and ask whet the laws are. Since you are from California but going to school in New Hampshire, you'd pretty much be considered a resident. But check the law... if you decide to register in NH, you can't vote in Cali until you go home and re-register there.

If you do that, that's voter fraud. Twenty to life in the Federal Pen.

Hilda Said:

i want to register, not declare a party..in CA...can i vote for either party or no?

We Answered:

The idea is that each party has the right to choose their own candidate. You can register for either party, and then you can vote for that party's candidates in the primary. If you register as independent, then you can't vote for candidates in the primary, only in the general election. But you can still vote for local offices, state initiatives, etc.

There was an initiative in yesterday's election to make 'open primaries', meaning that any voter could vote for any candidate in primaries for state elections, and then the top two vote-getters go on to the general election, regardless of party. This might mean that both candidates for governor or other state office might be from the same party! Apparently the votes aren't all counted and it's running very close, so in the next election it might be in place.

BTW, when you register to vote as 'independent', they put it down on the form as 'declines to state'. As if you really did believe in one party or the other, you were just too ashamed to admit it. 8^)

Kurt Said:

How do you register to vote?

We Answered:

I'm afraid it's too late. According to the CA Secretary of State webpage, your registration must have been postmarked or submitted by October 18th (15 days prior) to be registered for the upcoming election.

For next time though, go here:

http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/election…

It says you can get a form at your local library. Most states also ask if you'd like to register when you renew your driver's license, so if you have one of those coming up, that is another opportunity. You can also check at that website to see if you might already be registered, and didn't know it.
