Registering To Vote In Ohio

Sidney Said:

Moving to New York in August - staying registered to vote in Ohio?

We Answered:

You can vote absentee if you have a good reason to be out of the state at the time of the election - either in the military or in college, for example. You just have to send in your request for an absentee ballot to your COUNTY board of elections a couple of months in advance, and then vote and send back your vote about a month in advance. The only problem is, you might get called for jury duty in your parent's municipality.

Ohio used to have a law, called prop 249 I believe, where ,if you moved from one voting district or precinct to another within Ohio, you could vote in the old precinct if you moved 6 months or less before the election. The procedures were similar to absentee voting. I don't know whether this law still exists, but I do remember it swung at least one local election in 1993 :(

Now the big question is, is what you propose legal? Back in the 90's, if a judge found out you were voting in another state, you most likely got in no trouble but a kindly lecture about the advantages of changing your registration to where you live, with the judge shaking their head about how stupid you are. But now, in today's highly partisan climate, where 500 votes can swing an election, people would likely be calling for your head and claiming you committed voter fraud. There were calls for the prosecution of Republicans who declared themselves democrats during OHIO's primary in March of this year, but the state decided it would be too hard to prove. In California, you will be given provisional ballot.

Deanna Said:

Since Obama bussed in College kids to vote in Ohio this week, should McCain bus in senoirs next week?

We Answered:

The problem is these college students are voting in two states, and they are picking homeless people up with NO id and registering them. They even admitted to telling them to vote for Obama and they would buy them alcohol. McCain has 5000 lawyers out there trying to stop this, and Obama has 9000 trying to keep it going. If Obama wins because of these 5 states that are doing this there will be a law suit and a recount, so who knows when we will find out who wins if this happens.

Marian Said:

My husbands in the marines and we're stationed in SC, but i'm registered to vote in Ohio. How can i vote?

We Answered:

Active duty members of the armed services

If you are serving on active duty in the U.S. armed forces outside Ohio and meet the requirements for voting in Ohio, you may vote an armed services absentee ballot. Your spouse and dependents may vote an armed services absentee ballot only if they left Ohio to be with or near you.
What is the voting residence of a service member?

The voting residence of a service member is the place in Ohio where the service member resided immediately preceding the commencement of his or her service, unless he or she later established a voting residence elsewhere in Ohio.
Must armed services absentee voters be registered to vote?

Yes.
How do I apply for an armed services absentee ballot?

Qualified electors who are members of the armed services have multiple options available when applying for absentee ballots:

1. If you are not currently a registered Ohio voter, you may use the current Federal Post Card Application (FPCA), available online at www.fvap.gov, both to register to vote and to request absentee ballots.
2. If you already are a registered Ohio voter, you may request an absentee ballot using a form prescribed by the Ohio Secretary of State (Form 11-A if you will be in Ohio during the absentee period, Form 11-D or an FPCA otherwise).
3. If you already are registered to vote, you may designate a relative to request an absentee ballot on your behalf. Your relative must use the form prescribed by the Ohio Secretary of State (Form 11-E).
