Did you get some kind of a receipt for the registration? If so, call the number on it and ask about the status. If there is no receipt, then call the local voter registration office and find out what is happening. I much prefer our system where the voter lists are now updated annually when you file your income tax return.

Dear me, I find your plea amusing. A PAN card is not difficult to get, if you have done everything by yourself and have not left on some agent or a tout. Here is what you could do:
a) Go to an office of Karvy Consultant or a customer cell of UTI (not that erstwhile bank but the NBFC) in your city. If there isn't any, get them on the net. They are the parties outsourced by the Income Tax dept for this work.
b) Fill up the form, provide your photo and an address proof like a photocopy of the ration card, your mobile telephone bill etc.
c) Hand over the form to them along with a fee of Rs. 65/- or so.
You will get your PAN card by mail at the given address.

simply go down to the courthouse and change your party from independent to democrat or republican. the only difference is most states you cannot vote in the primary if you are an independent. there are some states that have open primaries though, so check to see if your state does that. it doesn't affect you voting in the general election at all.
