Question about voting in the 2010 Australian federal election?

We Answered:

Ok without going into too much detail my understanding is: In America they vote for the President, that is a single person who gets elected and holds the position. In Australia however we don’t vote for the Prime Minister, instead we vote locally (which is your electorate), we vote for political parties to represent both the House of Reps and Senate. The party that has the majority then elects who they want to be their leader (and the opposition does the same – hence we have an opposition leader) in this case those leaders have already been chosen and will be Gillard for labour and Abbott for Liberals, but the party can change leadership as they see fit (as happened to K Rudd)

So yes you can vote for other smaller parties such as the greens, democrats, nationals and more and I think it’s to be encouraged, some people also run without the support of a party and are known as independents. In some cases if the parties have similar values they join together to strengthen their numbers this is known as a coalition (a common coalition is between the Liberals and the Nationals and they are known as The Coalition). Often the Greens and Democrats will side with labour but not necessarily. Basically one party needs a majority to be effective in passing laws otherwise nothing would get passed so coalitions become important.

If you vote for a smaller party or independent and that party/person is not elected they then pass that on to the party they would prefer to win, this is known as preferences. With the big sheet If you vote about the line the party will pass on preferences to the parties they support and if you vote below the line you are manually setting how your preferences will work

Hope that helps and isn’t too much info

Who are you voting for in the 2010 election?

We Answered:

Lib Dems were the only major party against the Iraq war. They want political reform, fairness, responsibility; want to cut Trident and scrap ID cards, rein in government administration, raise tax threshold, reduce global warming, and invest in science.

And these are their real long-standing policies, not something they’ve just dreamt up for this election, like the other lot.

And BTW, they want to scrap university tuition fees

That’s 11 reasons so far. More at www.libdems.org.uk

(And WHY do the Tories want a tax giveaway for the wealthiest when they say the most urgent job is to cut the deficit?)

How important is the economy when voting in the 2010 election?

We Answered:

* wall street is doing great , bonuses are UP 9% this year to 145 billion . in 2010 2Q the top 100 NON-financial companies made $1 trillion profit ( not gross sales , PROFITS . to give perspective , that would average out to $32,000 a year for EVERY working person in america . and this is just 100 companies . the average hedge fund manager made $1 billion in 2009 ( 2009 was a slow year for them ) . the dow is over 10,500 . the US economy is humming along great . they see no recession .
unfortunately , these people are holding back on giving raises or creating jobs for political reasons . and i don't mean taxes ( they make a profit no matter what the tax rate is ) i mean they are trying to sway public opinion to go against common sense . they want the public to vote 'conservative' so the zionist agenda of greed of wall street , corporations , and the bankers can continue to screw the working man .
