When Did Women Get The Right To Vote

Tommy Said:

When Did Women Get the Right to Vote in the USA?

We Answered:

1914 for Montana and Nevada. The rest of the country in 1920. Interesting that the first two were semi-frontier states. Maybe the men had more respect for the women out there because they had seen what they could do when push came to shove.

When did African American men and American women get the right to vote in Texas?

We Answered:

There were two times...during reconstruction and in the late 50's.

When did women get the right to vote in the US and Canada -- Is that date celebrated if not why not?

We Answered:

Canadian legal history reflects its colonial past. Women's rights generally followed those of the British "Married Women's Property Act." Suffrage was extended in Canada under what is known as "The Person's Act" which declared women to be persons for purposes of interpretting existing statutes. I don't know what the date was, but I do know that a statue of some suffragettes was fairly recently unveiled on Parliament Hill. Nellie McClung was one of them.
As for celebrating, no doubt some feminists do, but the general population - including the vast majority of women - does not.

Zachary Said:

When did Black Women get their right to vote?

We Answered:

On August 26, 1920 women were given the right to vote. But, because many African Americans can not afford to pay poll taxes, were denied to right to vote. In 1940, only 3% of eligible African Americans in the South were registered to vote.

So, African american women were able to vote in 1920, but most couldnt, because of the pricey poll taxes.

Lydia Said:

Did women get to vote on the law which gave women the right to vote? Or was it that men gave women the right?

We Answered:

Assuming you are talking about America, a narrow majority of male senators voted to give women the vote in the USA in 1920. However, it was a very close thing.

It is however something of an exaggeration to ssay that women had no rights before they got the vote. Laws on married women's property and on divorce for instance were changed long before women got the right to vote.
