Should we just stick with the popular vote?

We Answered:

I can go on and on about why the electoral college makes sense, and why if we relied solely on the popular vote we'd see public policy shaped to inordinately benefit major population centers. But I won't. I'll give you an example that makes sense at a more instinctive level: the World Series.

The World Series is a best of seven games tournament, where runs decide the winner of the game and won games determines the final winner. This is almost exactly like the electoral college, where popular votes are runs, but states count as games. Suppose the Giants played the Yankees in the World Series. The games were pretty even, with the Giants up 3-2. But in game 6 they had an off day. The Yankees destroyed them, and won by 11 runs. Even though the Giants came back in game 7 and won the series the Yankees scored more total runs over the course of the series.

Now, should the trophy go to the Giants, who won the games, or the Yankees, who scored more runs? I can't find anybody who would tell me that the World Series should simply be 7 games and the runs totalled up at the end to pick a winner. You have to win GAMES. And sometimes a single run will be the deciding factor, sometimes 6 runs don't even matter. If you hit a home run when you're up by 7 it's not nearly as cool as if you hit it when both teams are tied. But the likelihood of your home run winning the game, and hence the series, increases if done the way it's done. So does your vote. The electoral college INCREASES the power of your vote. Don't dilute it with a strict popular vote.
