As a young voter (18+), what's the main reason why you want McCain or Obama to be president?

I'm voting for McCain because I don't like socialism.

Ella Said:

Why during elections do the media only speak of "independent" votes as if they're the middle vote?

We Answered:

you are confusing independent voters with the Independent Party. Two different groups of people. A person of any political affiliation can be non-partisan.

Peter Said:

will Americans voters be completely Independent within 100 years?

We Answered:

If you read Megatrends, a very influential book published in the 1970s, one of the huge trends of that time was that more and more people were registering as independent, voting for 'the man, not the party'.

Partisanship came back for the 1980 election. The Republicans are now, were then, and have ALWAYS been the minority party in terms of voter registrations. The only way a minority party can win is through partisan divisiveness, getting their 'base' all excited, getting them to the polls in bigger numbers than the other party. Partisanship was very strong and ugly all through the 80s and 90s. And GW Bush, from his first day in office, did all he could to polarize the electorate.

People today are disgusted with both parties. They see that they are really the same party. Money has become so important in elections that we no longer have elections, we have -auctions-. Both parties get their money from the same sources, so you can't expect their agendas to be all that much different.

Plus what the parties stand for has changed. Republicans were once the party of small government, the party of fiscal responsibility. Those days are gone! Democrats used to be the party of working people, but that's gone too.

Many many people registered to vote in 2008 that have never bothered to vote before, including a huge number of young people, new voters. A lot of these people didn't vote before because they were turned off by partisanship. So it's good that they registered as independents. I believe that the more people who vote, the better we will do.
